i need help with my physics study guide?

the question is: a stone is thrown horizontally at a speed of 10m/s from a cliff 78.4m high. how long does it take to reach the bottom and how far away from the base of the cliff does it fall? ignore air resistance

OK, so there are some things you need to know for this problem. First of all, since the stone is thrown with no vertical velocity, the starting velocity in the Y direction will be 0; however, it will increase at the pace of gravity, 9.8 meters per second squared. The starting velocity in the X will be 10 m/s, and because there is no "gravity" or air resistance pulling it sideways, the X velocity will stay constant throughout the problem. Now we can find the time through one of the kinematic equations:

The distance (d) in the Y is 78.4m, the initial velocity is 0, and a = 9.8 m/s^2. So time (t) ends up being 4 seconds.

For the distance from the base, we can just multiply the 10 m/s (because the velocity in the X is constant) by the 4s to get 40 meters.
